Healthcare Initiative

In January 2004, at its annual King Holiday Celebration, Roy Innis, National Chairman of CORE, formally announced the organization’s new healthcare initiative. Secretary of Health & Human Services Tommy Thompson and several leaders of the Healthcare & Medical industries were in attendance.

CORE Chairman Roy Innis said a “poverty of information” exists in our community about healthcare.  People are either not aware of or don’t understand the changes being made and the options available to them in the areas of health insurance and discount prescription drug plans. CORE intends to bolster communication between the medical industry, health professionals and the community.

Initiative

This new initiative marks the CORE Chairman’s return to the health industry. He has come full circle--from a medical researcher to a civil rights leader and now an advocate for equal access to healthcare information.  Mr. Innis says that health, and the right to information about health and medical treatment, is a fundamental civil and human right.

Last summer, The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and Together Rx kicked off an extensive healthcare awareness campaign with a gala festival in New York’s Times Square.  The event drew over half a million people.

CORE worked hand in hand with Together Rx and other healthcare providers to disseminate information to those who attended.  This effort is on-going and is designed to be beneficial to both the public and private sectors of the health industry.

The public should have easy access to information about healthcare, health insurance, discount drug plans and what special programs and benefits they may be eligible to receive. CORE hopes that these annual Healthcare Awareness Expos and free seminars will be the foundation for a more aware and healthy community.
